We used an old audio monitor because I hated watching my sleeping baby on a screen. I felt like I was waiting for something terrible to happen.
One night a woman whispered, “Turn him over.”
I ran upstairs. He was asleep on his back, perfectly fine. My husband checked the house, then explained that monitors could pick up other signals.
The next night it said, “He’s looking at me.”
I was already in the nursery. The receiver was downstairs with my husband. Our son was awake, staring just above my shoulder with the fixed, delighted expression babies have when they recognise someone.
I turned. Nothing there. He began laughing and reaching past my face.
We threw the monitor away. I don’t think that solved anything; I think it stopped us hearing it. For a while I wished we’d kept it so I could ask the woman what she wanted. Then my son started sleeping properly, and I discovered how willing I was to stop asking questions.
