He had a lanyard and a little machine in his hand. I didn’t look closely. I’d been expecting someone about the electricity account, and I was on a work call when he knocked.
The meter was in a cupboard under the stairs. I pointed him towards it and went back to the kitchen.
He asked how many people lived in the house. I answered two. He asked what time my partner came home. That got my attention.
He was kneeling in the cupboard with his head turned to look at the underside of the stairs. The meter was beside his shoulder. In his hand was a folded piece of paper, not a machine. I could see a rough drawing of our upstairs landing.
I told him my partner was already home. Shouted up the stairs to nobody. He stood, smiled without saying anything, and walked out.
I locked the door and called the company. They hadn’t sent anyone. Then I called the police.
Nothing supernatural happened. I didn’t see him again. But somebody had drawn the shape of the landing accurately, including the cupboard we had built only a month earlier. We changed the locks that night, and I spent the next week inspecting every ceiling panel I could reach.
