I was eating crisps at a bus stop when a woman asked if I could change a pound. She held out a palm full of coins. All copper.
I said I didn’t have any change. She started counting anyway, setting the coins on the low wall beside me. Each one landed with a wet clicking sound.
The bus came round the corner. I stood up. She asked, quite sharply, “Will you check them?”
I looked down. The coins were little discs of dark water sitting on top of the brick. They held their shape even where the mortar dipped. One moved towards my hand.
I got on the bus without answering. The driver looked past me and asked if the lady was coming. I said no too quickly.
So somebody else saw her. That’s why I haven’t managed to turn it into a trick of the light. I still wonder what she’d have done if I’d put out my hand. Wondering is as far as I’m prepared to take it.
