Keaau Beach: Two Men Waiting on the Bottom of Their Boat

Their fishing boat was upside down. A distress beacon supplied positions while a helicopter crew searched the west side of Oahu.

At 1:58 p.m., a personal locator beacon sent an alert from the west side of Oahu. Somewhere offshore from Keaau Beach Park, two men were sitting on an overturned fishing boat.

The vessel was twelve feet long. Both men were wearing life jackets.

The Keaau Beach boat rescue took place on July 3, 2026. The alert gave responders a way to connect two men on an inverted hull with an aircraft crew able to reach them.

Keaau Beach: The boat was no longer a fishing platform

Once the vessel capsized, the useful space available to its occupants changed. The boat’s bottom became the surface on which they waited.

The public release does not establish why the capsize occurred or how long the men had been in distress before the alert. It does establish that the beacon indicated positions along Oahu’s west side.

Coast Guard watchstanders broadcast the emergency and directed an MH-65 helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point to launch.

The aircraft reached the overturned vessel and its two occupants at 3:27 p.m. That was eighty-nine minutes after the recorded alert, although the overall duration of the men’s ordeal is not specified.

A position became a rescue

The helicopter crew hoisted both men and carried them ashore to the air station at Kapolei.

Both men came off the hull alive. Equipment small enough to wear or carry had remained useful after the fishing boat overturned.

The life jackets remained with them after the boat overturned. The beacon remained able to communicate a location after the vessel could no longer function as transport. The helicopter supplied the final connection to land.

The report ends with the men safely ashore. Before that ending, they occupied a small, exposed piece of a boat that had ceased to do the thing they had taken it out to do.

The reversal is the disturbing part: the same hull that had carried them fishing became something to climb onto and wait beside, while help followed a signal across the water.
