Charles Gregory: Found Sitting in a Boat That Was Almost Underwater

His family reported that he had not returned to the boat ramp. An aircraft found him the next morning, still sitting in a partially submerged twelve-foot boat.

The aircraft crew found Charles Gregory sitting in his boat. Much of the small vessel was already beneath the water.

On August 5, 2023, the twenty-five-year-old was located about twelve miles offshore from St. Augustine, Florida. The jon boat was only twelve feet long.

The Charles Gregory boat rescue followed a family report that he had failed to return to Lighthouse Park Boat Ramp. Coast Guard watchstanders received that report on Friday evening; an HC-130 aircraft spotted him on Saturday morning.

Charles Gregory: A search for a very small target

The official account describes a coordinated effort involving Coast Guard aircraft, boats, a cutter and multiple local agencies. Each had a different role in turning an overdue report into a safe return.

The aircraft could search across a broad area and identify the boat’s position. A crew from the cutter Coho could then reach Gregory on the water.

Finding the boat established a position the overdue report could not provide. Getting Gregory off it still required a crew to cross the remaining water and transfer him into a vessel capable of returning to shore.

He was alive in an unusually small craft, well away from the return point his family expected him to reach.

From the boat to the pier

The Coho crew recovered Gregory and transferred him to a Station Mayport boat crew. That crew took him to emergency medical personnel at Vilano Beach Fishing Pier.

The Coast Guard release reported no medical concerns. Its associated photographs document the transfer after the rescue.

By the time Gregory reached the pier, his family’s report had led to an aircraft sighting and two transfers between rescue crews. He was back on land with no medical concerns reported.

What makes the account frightening is the condition in which the boat remained useful. It was no longer providing the normal separation between its passenger and the sea. Nevertheless, it was still a physical place for him to remain and a target the aircraft could recognize.

A family’s knowledge of where someone should have returned helped start the response. A flight crew found the place he actually was. Boat crews connected that sighting to a pier onshore.

The photograph of a person sitting in a partially submerged vessel captures the narrowness of the gap they closed: enough boat left to find, enough time left to bring its occupant home.
